The missile in question is specifically designed for short and medium ranges, boasting high lethality against a diverse array of targets such as aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Its applications extend to both air platforms, where it can be deployed as individual missiles, and to ground units and ships, which have the option of utilizing the MICA Vertical Launch (VL) System for rapid-fire capability. Notably, the missile incorporates a thrust vector control (TVC) system.

Originating from development efforts initiated in 1982 by Matra, the missile underwent its first trials in 1991 and received commissioning in 1996 for integration into the Mirage 2000. A significant milestone was reached on June 11, 2007, when a MICA launched from a Rafale showcased its over-the-shoulder capability by successfully destroying a target situated behind the launching aircraft. The target’s designation was facilitated by another aircraft, with coordinates transmitted through the Link 16 tactical data link.

In addition to its air-to-air capabilities, the MICA missile can also be used in surface-to-air roles, making it a versatile weapon system for air defence roles.

  • Beyond Visual Range (BVR) multi-target / multi-shoot
  • Enhanced Short Range (SR) performance
  • Maximum Flexibility for Multi-role / swing-role aircraft

The weapon is designed to address Beyond Visual Range situations and, additionally, provides two guidance systems featuring two interoperable seekers:

  • RF MICA with radar seeker providing all-weather shoot-up / shoot-down capability
  • IR MICA with dual waveband imaging infrared seeker surpassing latest generation AAM missiles.

MICA surpasses alternative Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles due to its distinctive capability for stealthy interception, facilitated by its silent seeker technology.

Performance Characteristics of the MICA Missile

MICA RF and MICA IR have seekers designed to counteract measures such as fake flares and chaff. The missile’s rocket motor, equipped with a thrust vector control unit, enhances its agility. Thanks to its lock-on after-launch (LOAL) capability, the missile can engage targets beyond its seeker’s at-launch acquisition range. The MICA IR, when mounted on the Rafale, can serve as an additional sensor by supplying infrared imaging to the central data processing system.

The other version of MICA serves as a versatile short-range surface-to-air missile, with applications in both ground and naval settings. The ground-based variant, VL MICA, is designed to launch from a truck-mounted box launcher, while the naval version, VL MICA-M, is designed to fire from a ship-fitted vertical launch system. In October 2008, a VL MICA missile successfully concluded its 14th and final test firing, confirming its readiness for mass production. During this test, a target drone flew at a low altitude over the sea, approximately 12 km away. Despite the considerable distance, MICA, equipped with an active radar seeker, precisely tracked and intercepted the target.

Specially designed for naval Corvettes, which are too small to integrate the big and costly Aster missile system, the VL MICA-M system is the most likely choice. It offers similar capabilities as the Aster missile but without its booster and PIF-PAF vectorial control ( “PIF-PAF” stands for “Pilotage Inertiel en Force” (Inertial Steering with Force) and “Pilotage Aeronautique en Force” (Aerodynamic Steering with Force).

However, while the VL MICA boasts a stated range of 20 km, its aerodynamic performance experiences significant degradation at such extended distances. From 0 to 7 km, the MICA exhibits impressive manoeuvrability of 50g; however, beyond this range, specifically by 12 km, this capability is reduced to 30g due to the loss of energy. Still, with such manoeuvrability, it is enough to neutralize incoming threats.
